AN HISTORICAL BALLAD OF THE PROCEEDINGS AT PHILADELPHIA.
24th and 25th May, 1779, by a Loyalist who happened to pass
through the city at that time, on his way from the Southward
to New-York.
Canto I.
'Twas on the twenty fourth of May
A pleasant, warm, sun-shiny day,
Militia folks paraded.
With colours spread, with cannon too,
Such loud huzzas, such martial shew,
I thought the town invaded!
. . . [18 more Cantos, of 6 lines each.]
Vide the letter from Cleves on the Lower Rhine, in Dunlap's
Packet, May 25, 1779.
